Global Basmati Trade Outlook 2026: What Importers Should Expect

India remains the world's dominant basmati supplier, exporting roughly 5–6 million tonnes annually worth about USD 5.5–6 billion, with the Middle East taking well over half of that volume. For 2026, the picture for importers is one of healthy supply from a strong kharif crop, competitive FOB prices versus recent years, and continuing premiumisation — buyers shifting from loose commodity basmati toward branded and private-label packed rice.

Demand by region

  • GCC (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain) — the deepest basmati market globally; steady volume growth plus a clear shift to branded retail packs and HoReCa-grade golden sella. Saudi Arabia is consistently the single largest basmati importer.
  • Iran and Iraq — large, price-sensitive volume markets for 1121 and steam varieties; trade flows fluctuate with payment channels and import policy, so shipment timing matters more than in any other corridor.
  • Europe and the UK — stable, compliance-driven demand; pesticide-residue (MRL) conformity and traceability decide supplier selection more than price. Private label dominates.
  • United States — growing premium retail demand for branded basmati, especially in ethnic and mainstream grocery.

Variety mix

1121 sella and steam remain the export workhorses for the Gulf; 1509 and 1718 have taken share on better farm economics and milling yields; traditional basmati holds the top premium niche. GRM processes and exports all major varieties — see Products.

What to watch in 2026

The size and quality of the new kharif crop, Indian paddy prices through the October–December procurement season, freight rates on India–Gulf and India–Europe lanes, and any changes to India's export policy. Importers locking 6–12 month programs with milled-to-order supply from aged stock are best insulated from mid-season swings.
